The Perugia MiniMetro line is a 3.863 meters long automatic transportation system inserted in the urban context of the city: it has been designed in a way to minimize possible environmental and noise impacts by propelling it with rope traction, without any kind of electrification.

The MiniMetro light rail is a double-way line where 25 unmotorized wagons, with a capacity of 50 people each, move back and forth the different stations pulled by a rope system. While approaching a station, the wagon automatically unhooks from the rope that moved it and encounter a specific rubber wheels that, by friction, slow down the movement until final stop allowing passengers’ disembarkation. The same wheels then support the wagon to pick up speed until it hooks to the rope again. This metro line has been realized, in its elevated parts, with a steel deck made of welded beams with different dimensions, basing on the elevation. The artistic direction of the design has been entrusted to the internationally renowned architect Jean Nouvel.
